Avatar 2 Release Date, Cast, and Movie Plot: Latest Confirmations and Rumors

Avatar

The Avatar 2 release date may have been delayed, but many details including plot and cast have surfaced online. In the sections below, we will explore the latest information so far.

Sigourney Weaver to Reprise Role

Though her character died in Avatar, Sigourney Weaver is still returning for the next installments. Audience members may recall seeing the actress star as Dr. Grace Augustine. James Cameron had a rather bizarre answer to the baffling resurrection.

"Nobody dies in a science fiction movie," Cameron said, according to Cinema Blend. "Whether Grace lives of dies depends more on Sigourney's agent than anything."

Yet, there may be a possibility Grace is returning in flashback sequences - long before Jake arrives in Pandora. It remains to be seen how Cameron will handle this character.

Avid science-fiction fans will definitely remember Sigourney as Ellen Ripley, the protagonist from the Aliens film franchise. Also, the second 1986 Aliens film was directed by a much younger James Cameron.

Jake and Neytiri are Coming Back Too

Jake Sully, the paraplegic space marine, traded places with his Na'vi avatar at the end of the first film. It will be interesting to see what Jake does with his new body. Sam Worthington, who plays Jake, has already signed a contract binding him to the sequel trilogy.

The actor will be accompanied by Zoe Saldana, the actress who starred as Neytiri - Jake's Na'vi love interest. Like Sigourney, Zoe is no stranger to sci-fi. The actress has already starred in J.J. Abram's Star Trek reboot and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy.

Release Date Pushed Back to Christmas Day 2017

Avatar 2 was originally slated for a Christmas Day 2016 release. Last month, the film's director James Cameron decided to push the debut by one year. So, the Avatar sequel will not be in theaters until December 25, 2017.

One reason for the delay is Cameron's decision to iron out the details for not one, but three sequels. According to Screen Rant, Cameron had already created material enough to fill in four movies. He subsequently had to trim down the content.

Meanwhile, Cameron is working with four different screenwriters. Avatar 2 will be penned by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the creative duo behind Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Avatar 3 will be written by Josh Friedman whose credits include Terminator: The Sarah Conor Chronicles. Avatar 4 will be written by Shane Saleno, who co-wrote Savages with director Oliver Stone.

Avatar 3 will debut in 2018, while Avatar 4 will premiere in 2019.
