"The Big Bang Theory" left fans hanging when it aired its final episode in Season 8. With the premiere date of the ninth season set on Sept. 21, an increasing number fans and followers of the sitcom are searching for spoilers. Following an ending with numerous unresolved mysteries, one major storyline has viewers speculating: What lies in store in the future of the romantic relationship between Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik)?

The breakup of Amy and Sheldon had left fans of "The Big Bang Theory" blindsided and at a loss. While the two have not always been perceived as a "normal" couple, viewers have come to realize how Amy's demeanor perfectly complements Sheldon's quirks. As the two grew closer, fans were treated to the soft and romantic side of the typically anti-romance scientist. Their years of being a couple, however, finally took a toll on Amy who had been seen making majority of the adjustment to make their romance work.

With this in mind, the Season 8 finale of "The Big Bang Theory" saw the breaking point of Amy. Frustrated at the very slow pace of their relationship in terms of their physical and emotional connections, she decided to take a step back and figure out if she still wants to be with Sheldon - a man whom she dearly loves but one who could not seem to get the hang of romantic entanglements. Making up her mind before Sheldon had the chance to make amends from their previous discussion, Amy asked for a break from their relationship via a Skype call.

The announcement shocked Sheldon who was uncharacteristically at a loss for words. Upon the conclusion of their online conversation, Sheldon turned to a Gollum figurine on his desk and asked the figure what he should with the ring in his pocket. While no official confirmation has been made, fans were quick to conclude that Sheldon was about to propose to Amy and the ring was for their engagement.

With the premiere date of "The Big Bang Theory" Season 9 fast approaching, fans are becoming more curious on what is in store. Steve Molero, one of the executive producers of "The Big Bang Theory" went on to slam rumors regarding a quick reconciliation between Sheldon and Amy. Stating that Amy is "determined to stick to her guns," Molero shared that Sheldon's now ex-girlfriend intends to take her time to think things through.

"Right now, she really wants to take a step back and think about where she is, where they are and how she wants to move forward in her life," Molero said, according to Entertainment Weekly. He added, "I don't think she's necessarily in a rush to find another man, but I don't think she's ruling it out either."

Taking into consideration the fact that Amy is not against seeking romance from someone else, a few possibilities come to mind. With Sheldon out of the picture, albeit temporarily, fans might be wondering who else could be out there for Amy. If history is to repeat itself, then it would be logical to assume that Amy might meet her new man through online dating sites. Granted that Amy only signed up on the online dating site out of an agreement with her mother, the possibility that another profile match could be made.

Apart from the online dating scene, Amy's background also offers a rich source of potential new boyfriends. A graduate of Harvard, "The Big Bang Theory" Season 9 could see Amy reuniting with her college buddies. Since she also spent a semester in Norway, finding a love match from that place also poses a good chance. With the breakdown of her five-year plan to become Mrs. Cooper, "The Big Bang Theory" Season 9 will definitely offer a number of new romantic possibilities for Amy - that is, if she does not eventually decide to go back to Sheldon's arms.
