The Legend of Zelda franchise has been a gaming juggernaut and a huge cultural icon since its introduction in the late 80's and the early 90's, and with its transition to much more advanced gaming platforms, only gained even more popularity. And with Nintendo's latest gaming platform, the "Wii U," fans are craving for a present day treatment to the franchise.

Nintendo has remained secretive about the release date of The Legend of Zelda for Wii U, to the point of very little key features not leaking out to the public, but the video game entertainment company discussed a possible addition to the game in a recent interview.

According to an email interview with IGN, Nintendo producer Eiji Aonuma revealed that the supposed younger sister of Link, Linkle, could make an appearance in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda video game on Wii U game system.

Linkle is one of the playable characters that will be featured in The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors Legends, which is scheduled to be released on the Nintendo 3DS in 2016. You can also unlock the Linkle character in the Wii U version of the game.

As stated by Aonuma, Linkle was supposed to be unveiled as Link's sister. But they decided not to go through with the idea since it will be a conflict with the concept of another character in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker named Aryll.

While not being launched and introduced as Link's younger sister, Linkle will instead debut on The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors Legends as a girl with great heroic aspirations. This will allegedly serve the purpose of being a unique background for the long-running game franchise.

"It may feel a little different from other titles in the franchise, but she doesn't feel out of place at all in the world of the Zelda games," Aonuma added.

The game producer also explained that he had an opportunity to offer feedback on Linkle during the character's development stage. But he mentioned that using a crossbow similar to the one that they implemented for the spinoff game Link's Crossbow Training can be experienced in future installments of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors Legends will be available to gamers on the Nintendo 3DS sometime in 2016. The Legend of Zelda on Wii U is also expected to be released around the same time.
