Lonely days may have passed for Meredith Grey when ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ returns to ABC for its new season. Executive producer Betsy Beers opened up about Ellen Pompeo’s character who, she believes, should have another chance to experience love and happiness following the death of Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey.

"I think she deserves some love," the TV producer told Variety during the ATX Television Festival at Austin, Texas.

"She spent a lot of time saying 'I don't need it, I'm fine, my life will go on,' and there was something about that, that I felt so pleased and so satisfied. I feel like there's something incredibly delicious about getting to watch this, so fingers crossed this is the tip of an iceberg," Beers further explained.

She also shared the interesting experience of Pompeo’s co-stars after learning that Meredith will fall for Nathan Riggs, played by Martin Henderson.

"That was certainly one of my favorite moments of all of the shows this year, and I can tell you that at the table read, the reaction from the actors was, 'Oh my god!' It was just one of those great moments of total surprise," Beers added.
In Season 12, the doctors exchanged a kiss after telling each other about their heartbreaking pasts.

However, such relationship won’t be an easy feat for Meredith and Nathan as the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12 finale suggested that a third party, particularly Kelly McCreary’s Maggie, Meredith’s half-sister, will make things more difficult for the pair.

Nonetheless, Pompeo spoke to TVLine earlier, saying that "there will only be one McDreamy ever" in Meredith’s life.

Kevin McKidd, who takes on the role of Owen Hunt on the medical series, discussed his character’s sentiments on what could happen on season 13, particularly on Meredith and Nathan’s relationship.

“I don’t think Owen is going to be happy about that,” McKidd said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “He’s almost becoming an unofficial brother to Meredith. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) was his friend. He’ll be a bit territorial, to be honest.”

Aside from his brotherly love and care for Meredith, Owen has his personal reasons for his disapproval of letting Riggs into their lives.

“The last time Riggs got close to somebody Owen cares about, she died,” McKidd recalled, pointing towards the supposed death of his character’s sister, Megan. “He might be being a little irrational when he finds out.”

Meanwhile, aside from relationships, other storylines of the new installment have been rumored to demonstrate workplace diversity. Even the addition of new cast members Constance Zimmer, Stella Maeve and Scott Foley is expected to either encourage Meredith or bring more trouble for her.

‘Grey's Anatomy’ season 13 is set to premiere this fall on ABC.
