How Netflix's The Witcher TV Series Could Overthrow Game of Thrones as King of Serial Shows

A new show based on The Witcher Saga is now underway. Netflix officials say they are developing the show based on the series of eight novels by Andrzej Sapkowsk which was the inspiration for the popular CD Projekt Red RPG titles. With supernatural elements and exciting combat scenes, many are wondering if the upcoming The Witcher series would topple HBO's Game of Thrones in the entertainment scene. Let's find out.

The Witcher has an engaging, thrilling, and the politically charged story that touches the fringes of grey morality, much like the Game of Thrones series. In addition, both are adaptations of best-selling novels. However, The Witcher series has a hugely popular game adaptation that Game of Thrones does not have.

Furthermore, The Witcher Saga and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has gripping storyline that is believable and extremely well done. The characters also have an incredible range of different tempers and attitudes that act in their own context.

In an article published in IGN, executive producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown said the characters in The Witcher Saga are "original, funny, and constantly surprising." They also added that the team is doing their best to translate those traits into the TV series.

Interestingly, the timing of this dark fantasy TV series is perfect as the popularity of Game of Thrones begins to wind down. As we already know, HBO's most popular fantasy show is on its last season and there are no hints that it will be extended. So, it will leave a hole for millions of viewers who want to watch an action-packed fantasy series.

Fans of the eight Witcher novels will not be disappointed as show runner Jarek Sawko stated that the book's subtexts will not be lost in the TV adaption. He emphasized that there is intellectual and moral depth in the novels that go beyond any genre. "It is a story about today and today's challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts" he added.

The team also includes Tomas Baginski, who directed the intro videos in all Witcher games. The same source from IGN says he will direct at least one episode of the Season 1 of The Witcher series in Netflix.

As of this writing, the premiere date of The Witcher series is not yet revealed. We might hear more from Netflix in the next months to come.
