Activision confirmed a new Ghostbusters game will hit gaming shelves on July 12 in North America and July 15 in Europe. The game is set to be released alongside the franchise's upcoming movie. Now, here's what is currently known about 2016 Ghostbusters game release date, rumors, and updates.

Activision breaks the silence after the leak about the existence of an upcoming Ghostbusters game. Several tech websites reported that the game publisher have teamed up with Sony Pictures to announce a third-person action RPG with local co-op leanings. Mark Caplan, senior vice president of Sony Pictures Consumer Products, said that the "full-fledged" video game will be available to PS4, Xbox One and PC. However, the game developer's identity is still a mystery.

Moreover, IGN reported that the upcoming game is not a part of the toys-to-life game Lego Dimensions.

As for the story of the new Ghostbusters game, it will take place after the events of the new movie. According to Video Gamer, the game is a 4-player top-down RPG with a brand new cast of rookie Ghostbusters. They will keep New York City safe from "high-profile poltergeists". Also, players will have the opportunity to play as both male and female characters, but they won't able to interact with the older cast nor the present cast. Each character has their own unique characteristics and play style that will help the whole team. It is reported that players can raise the level of their characters by fighting ghosts. Players can also discover hidden collectibles to help their missions. In addition, the famous Proton Packs will be featured in the game.

Furthermore, the trailer for the 2016 Ghostbusters game was published in USA Today. The video showed a glimpse of the gameplay and graphics. It also revealed the game's release dates which are July 12 in North America and July 15 in Europe.

Meanwhile, another Ghostbusters game is set to be released in July. According to Activision Games Blog, the game publisher will release a game entitled Ghostbusters: Slime City. It will be launched for iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Android, and Kindle devices. The said game for smartphones will feature upgradable headquarters, character progression, and asynchronous co-op.

In 2009, a Ghostbusters game is also released by Atari. It was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The voices were acted by the original cast, including Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray.
