Sprint rolls out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update on Thursday for the Samsung Galaxy s3, making it the only carrier in the United States to do so.

This comes as no big surprise because as Sprint was already the first U.S. carrier to confirm a release date for Galaxy s3. But this may very well be the last update by Sprint for the Galaxy s3, which saw its release in 2012. Despite its long popularity record, the Galaxy s3 has slowly been surpassed by newer technology such as the Galaxy s4 and Galaxy s5. And, with the Galaxy s6 already in the works, the Galaxy s3 is rapidly becoming a relic of the past - a development that spans just two years.

So, what makes the Android 4.4.2 KitKat so awesome? For starters, users will start seeing improvements including enhanced security, better power efficiency, full-screen immersive mode, and redesigned status and navigation bars. Other notable changes include give users the ability to choose a default messaging app if multiple messaging services have been installed. Also, users will be able to access the camera and music library through the lock screen. Improvements have also extended to the location menu, allowing for easier access to GPS and the ability to share location details.

Samsung has so far released the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the Galaxy s4 and the Galaxy Note 3, which will roll out to all major American carriers this year. But going into the second quarter of this year, Samsung has yet to fulfill its 2014 list of Android 4.4 KitKat updates. The most that has been done so far is that the Android 4.4.2 KitKat has already rolled out for the Samsung Galaxy s4 for Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon. And, there are rumors circulating the web that Samsung is already at work with the Android 4.4.3 KitKat.  

This may sound like bad news for Galaxy s3 users using other carriers, as giants including Verizon and AT&T have yet to announce a similar update for the Galaxy s3. But, carriers have been known to come forward to update older devices. Recently, the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was available to French users only, but the update may roll out to users of other countries soon. Sprint rivals have not been idle, and recently AT&T released the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.
