Android 5.0 Lollipop Release Date for HTC One M7, M8 : Source Code Released, Promise Update Within 90 Days

Owners of HTC's One M7 and One M8 will be happy to hear that their favorite smartphones will be getting the Android 5.0 Lollipop update within 90 days, according to official confirmation from the manufacturer.

Previously only mentioned briefly by HTC, the 90-day upgrade window has been confirmed by HTC's vice president of product management, Mo Versi, in a tweet on Monday. "We've received Android Lollipop code from Google, the clock starts now! HTC One (M8) and (M7) will be updated within 90 days!"

Despite the fact that HTC missed its self-imposed 90-day deadline for last year's update, we imagine they've taken measures against that this year.

Versi continued giving updates in subsequent replies to his original tweet, including some info on the One Max. "Yes the One Max will also get the update. Please monitor the SW page for timelines. Thanks."

The HTC One M7 (originally just known as the HTC One) was released in 2013 as the tech company's seventh flagship smartphone. Its high density 468 ppi display at 1080p and dual front-facing stereo speakers are just a few of the features that have earned the phone several awards, including Best New Mobile Device by the GSM Association at Mobile World Congress 2013.

The HTC One M8 is 2014's successor to the One M7, released in March of this year. The design is similar to the M7, but features a larger, rounded chassis with a 5-inch 1080p screen, a more powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, and a higher-resolution camera.

While the M8 is also available with a Windows Phone 8.1 option as an operating system, the Android version has proven more popular. This upgrade to Android 5.0 Lollipop will surely be a welcome addition for One M8 owners as the Android platform itself has proven the most popular mobile OS worldwide.

Now that the Android Lollipop source code is out, you can expect the race to be on for manufacturers to announce when users can expect the OS update to reach their devices. Keep in mind that this Android source code project allows individual carriers and developers to customize the code to suit their customers, so expect to see a wide variety of release dates according to what device and carrier you use.
