A few months ago, an Android vulnerability known as Stagefright has been discovered. It is a bug that exploits a supposed weakness within the mobile operating system that allows hackers to steal personal information from a victim's Android device.

The Stagefright bug arrives masked as an innocent-looking multimedia message (MMS). Once opened, it will give attackers access to a smartphone's or tablet's internal storage.

Google and Samsung have already acknowledged the presence of the Android bug and released separate updates to address the security risk. Devices locked to various carriers will then receive a Stagefright fix once telecom companies release their own security patches.

As part of the latest campaign to combat the said bug, AT&T and T-Mobile have just sent out an update to protect owners of the current LG G4 flagship smartphone.

An over-the-air (OTA) software update has been released by AT&T for the LG G4. The patch will includes numerous security improvements and the file size will be 46.7MB, according to the company's support page. Once the download is completed and installed, the handset's software version number should be H81010l and the OS should be marked as Android 5.1 build LMY47D.

Users of the LG G4 on T-Mobile may also expect the arrival of a software update anytime now. The magenta carrier has released a patch that will update the model's software version from H81110H to H81110N. However, users should make sure that ample amount of free memory is ready as the update will come with relatively hefty 353MB.

Apart from ensuring that the battery capacity is more than 50%, T-Mobile LG G4 users are also recommended to connect their device to a Wi-Fi network to avoid unnecessary data charges. Once the installation process is complete, the LG G4 will automatically reboot.

These patches are being rolled out in phases so not all AT&T and T-Mobile subscribers will receive the upgrade at the same time.

Meanwhile, owners of Samsung's 2013 flagship smartphone on T-Mobile will also be treated with a fix for the Android bug. T-Mobile Galaxy S4 handsets is currently being updated to Android 4.4.4 KitKat version with StageFright security fix.

The carrier's support page for the patch mentioned that the baseband version number is M919UVUFOH3 and the file size is 15MB. The software update is being sent out over-the-air and through Samsung KIES.

As usual, the carrier is releasing the patch in a gradual manner and users will be alerted by a notification. In case the notification does not arrive, it is also possible to manually check for the update by heading to Settings> About Phone> Software Updates.
