Android 5.1 Lollipop updates for the LG G3 and G2 may never arrive, according to a regional LG spokesman. In contrast, Sony has promised to roll out Android 5.1 Lollipop for the Xperia Z3 and Z2. Meanwhile, the estimated launch date for Google's newest Android M remains in question.

G3, G2 Android 5.1 Lollipop Update May Be Dead

Last week in Greece, LG Hellas confirmed that both the LG G3 and G2 will not be receiving Android 5.1 Lollipop anytime soon.

Greek-language publication TechValue.gr reported about the situation in an article that included screenshots of the original LG Hellas Facebook posting. It is unclear whether LG will globally exclude Android 5.1 Lollipop for the G3 and G2.

This recent development will disappoint users whom are experiencing problems with Android 5.0.2 Lollipop. Reported issues have included overheating, freezing, app crashes, significant battery drain, and inexplicable reboots. The Android 5.1 Lollipop was said to fix a number of those bugs.

Even so, not every consumer reported having issues. Some critics have praised Lollipop for enhanced performance and increased battery-life. Also, customer experience regarding Android Lollipop seems to vary across platforms and wireless service providers.

Is LG Waiting for Android M?

Various unconfirmed internet rumors suggest that LG may be holding back the G3 and G2 for Android M, which is said to be coming out later this year. Naturally, all manners of gossip will need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Even so, Google has a past habit of releasing one all-new Android firmware each year. The now ancient Android 4.4 KitKat was launched in September 2013, while Android 5.0 Lollipop was released in November 2014.

According to GottaBeMobile, Google may launch Android M in the third-quarter of 2015. That means consumers should expect to see the next Android anywhere between July and September.

Sony Vows to Rollout Android 5.1 Lollipop to Xperia Z3 and Z2

Starting in July, Sony will upgrade the Xperia Z3 and Z2 to Android 5.1 Lollipop - according to their blog posting. Earlier this year, the Japanese tech firm pushed out Android 5.0 Lollipop on the entire Xperia Z series lineup. Both the Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3 will also be getting Android 5.1 Lollipop.

Naturally, users with unlocked devices will receive the update first. Those who are on a monthly subscription plan through a carrier will need to wait a bit longer. Generally, it takes awhile for wireless service providers to distribute the latest Android update from the manufacturers.
