Android M 6.0 Marshmallow, Android N Release Date For Sony Xperia Z5, Z4, Z3, and Z2 on Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon

Sony has a habit of lagging behind the other smartphone manufacturers when it comes to getting their users the latest version of Android.  In the case of Android M (otherwise known as version 6.0 or Marshmallow), there are still some of the newer phones that do not have it yet.  This is the latest news about Android M Version 6.0 Marshmallow and Android N Release Date for Sony Xperia Z5, Z4, Z3, and Z2 on Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile, US Cellular, and Verizon. 

A recent report stated that Sony is going to continue a Xperia Marshmallow beta preview into the summer, but this feels very slow compared to other Android smartphones like those from Samsung, HTC, Motorola, and LG. 

In fact, there hasn't really been much word on release dates for Android Marshmallow for Sony, but a lot of vague information.   According to Gotta Be Mobile, Sony open-sourced the Android 6.0 update, allowing developers and ROM makers from the Android community to build versions of Android 6.0 for select devices, which supposedly sped up the upgrade process. 

Here is a list of what Android devices are expected to receive the upgrade:

  • Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, Z5 Premium
  • Sony Xperia Z3+ / Z4
  • Sony Xperia Z3 / Z3v, Compact, Tablet Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z2 Tablet
  • Sony Xperia Z Ultra GPE
  • Sony Xperia C5 Ultra
  • Sony Xperia C4
  • Sony Xperia M5
  • Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

Most of the above-listed phones are running Android 6.0 already, and it is reported that those in the United States with the Xperia Z3, Z3V, Z4, and the Z5 received their upgrades in February and March.  Tech Radar reports that Sony also rolled out the update to the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, and it plans to bring Marshmallow to the Xperia M5, Xperia C5 Ultra, Xperia M4 Aqua, and Xperia C4. 

The best advice one can give a Sony user of a newer device in the United States is to see if you can't get the OTA download now.  Just go into the "Settings" and "System Update" to see if the upgrade is available.  The upgrade may not be available depending on your carriers like T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular, AT&T, and Verizon.  Feel free to leave a comment here saying whether or not you received your Marshmallow on your Sony device, as well as what carrier that you subscribe to. 

As far as the next version of Android is concerned, Sony is actually the only manufacturer with developer previews for Android N, which was only announced at Google I/O 2016 two weeks ago.
