Last week, there was a lot of progress in rolling out the latest version of Android Version 6.0 (also known as Android M or Marshmallow).  Part of the reason is that a lot of the big smartphone manufacturers like LG and Samsung unveiled their latest devices at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2016.  These devices are going to have Android 6.0 right out of the box, so it just makes sense to have their previous generation devices catch up to them. This is what is currently known about the Android M Version 6.0 Marshmallow Release Date for Sony Z5, Z5 Compact, Z5 Premium, Z4, and Z3 Series and More for US Cellular, T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon.

According to Know Your Mobile, Sony has officially unveiled some more details of its Marshmallow plans for the UK market, as of February 18th.  The Xperia Z4 Tablet, Xperia Z3 +, and all of the devices in the Xperia Z5 series (Z5, Z5 Premium, and Z5 Compact)will be upgraded to the newest version of Android on March 7.

The only reason this is known is due to some user question on Twitter, but this could just be a target date and not a solid date of arrival.  Many believed that the answer on Twitter was kind of a hoax release date.

However, Sony did confirm that it will post more at a later date, this is believed to only apply to unlocked devices.  Considering that it is often the case that some carriers receive the newest version of Android before others, it is possible that it could come later on US Cellular, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T.

However, the March 7 release date or target date was also confirmed by the Lawyer Herald, and XperiaBlog.net also highlighted that new firmware has already been certified by the BTRCB for Xperia Z3+ with a build number 32.1.A.0.434.

If the March 7th date is true, then it stands to reason that a global rollout will be coming, particularly in the United States.  Here is a list of Sony Xperia devices that are slated to receive the update.

  • Sony Xperia Z Ultra GPE
  • Sony Xperia Z3 / Z3v, Compact, Tablet Compact
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z2 Tablet
  • Sony Xperia Z5, Z5 Compact, Z5 Premium
  • Sony Xperia Z3+ / Z4
  • Sony Xperia C5 Ultra
  • Sony Xperia C4
  • Sony Xperia M5
  • Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

The issue with Sony is that they tend to be slow to release the newest versions of Android on their devices.  Sony doesn't exactly follow the trend of releasing a new device at Mobile World Congress, and event now going on in Barcelona, Spain, at the time of this writing.  Sony releases its newer phones later in the year, such as its current flagship Z5 series last year.  According to Popular Science, Sony did unveil a new projector, an assistant that fits in the ear, as well as a camera at MWC 2016.
