Many phone manufacturers are slowly updating their devices to Android 6.0 Marshmallow (Android M). After the holiday season, little has been known about the Android updates in Sony Xperia phones. Now, here's the latest news about Android M rollout on Sony Z5, Z5 Compact, Z5 Premium, Z4, and Z3 series.

The newest gadgets will receive the most recent version of Android operating System. In the case of Sony Xperia phones, Sony 5, the Z5 Premium, and the Z5 Compact will be receiving Android M first before the older devices. 

Sony Xperia Z3+/Z4, the Xperia C5 Ultra, the Xperia C4, the Xperia M5, and the Xperia M4 Aqua, and Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet are 2015 gadgets, so they are expected to get Android M update.

2014 models of Xperia area also due to get Marshmallow upgrade. Those gadgets are the Xperia Z3/Z3V, the Xperia Z3 Compact, the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, the Xperia Z2, and the Xperia Z2 Tablet. The only 2013 model included in the update is the Xperia Z Ultra GPE.

According to Know Your Mobile, Sony will update their entire Z5  devices this month of January. Also, the company said other devices might receive the Android 6 on their respective carriers like Verizon, US Cellular, Sprint, AT&T, and T-Mobile.

Reliable article from Android Pit said there is a beta test of Android 6.0 on the Z3 and Z3 Compact users, with a built in the first OTA update.  Owners of those devices can experience the beta version of the OS via OTA (over-the-air) notification.

Adding to the release date reports, Pocket-Lint published Sony that is working hard to bring the Marshmallow system in Xperia gadgets. However, there is still no timeline from the company about the official release date of the update.

For Xperia Z2 users who want to have the Android M, they can get it by installing custom ROM developed by rcstar6696, a senior member of the world renowned XDA developer forum.

The operating system is based on the AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Marshmallow OS. It offers the Doze battery saving feature, new security boot application and other value-added feature on Xperia Z2.

By installing the custom ROM, users can have improved device performance, but it makes the Sony warranty void; the company will no longer be liable to provide updates in future.

It is important to note that this firmware is an experimental version. So, there are some bugs in it. Users are advised to exercise caution before deciding to install the software.
