The new name for Android 8.0 looks most likely to be Android Oreo, and we are not surprised by that at all. After all, Google has always taken the path of naming the next version of their mobile operating system by following the first letter of the alphabet with a corresponding name of a dessert. After all, in the past we had Android 1.5 Cupcake, Android 1.6 Donut, Android 2.0/2.1 Eclair, Android 2.2 Froyo, Android 3.x Gingerbread & Honeycomb for tablets, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Android 4.4 KitKat, Android 5.0 Lollipop, Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Android 7.0 Nougat, and naturally, Android 8.0 Oreo. After all, what other kind of dessert do you think would have been popular enough to make the cut for Android 8.0?

Hiroshi Lockheimer, who is SVP of Android, Chrome OS and Play, introduced a teaser via his tweet that more or less unveiled Android Oreo unofficially -- by featuring a GIF of an Oreo cake. Many would have taken this to be a hint as the next version of Android 8.0 Oreo, but the whole world will know for sure whether Android 8.0 Oreo is the new name or not from the beginning of March onward. Perhaps more sweet, crumbly confirmations will come our way in the near future, who knows?

Following that tweet, Lockheimer posted up an image of “Pocky” biscuits complete with the hashtag #2018. Now that this is the year 2017, it would make sense for Android 8.0 Oreo to be released, but when it comes to 2018, is there a need for a new version of Android? Maybe, and we would not be surprised if 2018 would see Android 9.0 Pocky.

At press time, Android 7.0 Nougat continues to struggle in hoping to increase its presence when it comes to the length and breadth of its distribution. Well, this does not mean that the developers over at Google will sit down and do nothing, but rather, they are mulling over what to call the next version of Android. Oreo is highly popular all over the world, and who can forget about the famous Oreo cheesecake? Oreo crumbs are always a nice addition to have in any dessert, be it in a milkshake or sprinkles of it on top of a cake. Apart from that, it is always comforting to dip some Oreos into a glass of milk and eat it shortly afterwards. This would make Android Oreo as the prime candidate to fly Android 8.0’s flag as the next version name.

So far, it has always been an exciting affair in trying to guess as to what the next version of Android is going to be called. From time to time, there might be more community involvement in the naming convention of the upcoming Android version. For instance, Google did conduct a poll with the public for Android 7.0, and most people eventually decided to settle for Nougat, which is why we have Android 7.0 Nougat today. Other frontrunners for Android 7.0 included New York Cheesecake, Neyappam, as well as Nutella.
