Angry Birds Transformers released on the Apple Store last week and development studio Rovio Entertainment plans to release the popular crossover game on the Android by the end of this month.

Angry Birds Transformers is the tenth game in the Angry Birds library, mixing together the popular and familiar gameplay from the original game with the visuals of a stylized version of the 1980s Transformers cartoon. It's a side-scrolling action shoot-em-up game that lets you fling your characters at towers to make them collapse. The fewer turns it takes to collapse all towers on a screen, the more points you gain.

You play as the Autobirds and Deceptihogs (a play on the Autobots and Decepticons) to destroy these towers and capture the evil EggSpark. Three episodes were released at launch, including Beach, Forest, and Desert, with more coming soon.

The Angry Birds franchise is no stranger to intellectual property crossovers, including everything from Star Wars to the 20th Century Fox film, Rio. The series has enjoyed wild success and grown to include a line of toys, comics, a TV show, and even an upcoming 3D animated movie from Sony Pictures Imageworks.

Angry Birds Transformers has so far followed in the footsteps of its successful siblings by earning relatively positive reviews from most critics. The iOS version has a Metacritic score of 71/100 in its first week.

"If you love Transformers or Angry Birds, or best of all both, you'll probably get an hour or two of fun out of Angry Birds Transformers," TouchArcade's Shaun Musgrave says in the site's review. "Beyond that, you're going to have to have a lot of patience for timers and grinding coins."

The Guardian's Stuart Dredge breaks it down to the game's pros and cons: "The good news: Angry Birds Transformers captures the thrills robots in disguise held for the young me, while also introducing a bold new gameplay mechanic to Angry Birds. The not-so-good news: its enthusiastic adoption of freemium (or free-to-play) features makes it a bit more problematic as entertainment for the old me's young son."
Angry Birds Transformers is a free mobile game that is currently out now for iOS, and is coming October 20th to Android and November 4th to Amazon.
