Apple's iOS 8 OS will soon be rolling out on Wednesday, Sept. 17, on a number of mobile devices - namely the iPhone 5, iPhone 4, iPad Mini, iPad Air. The recently-launched iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus will be using the iOS 8 as well.

Consumers should start expecting the software at around 1pm EST, which is 10am PST. The iOS 8 can be downloaded over-the-air, or through an iTunes account. Before downloading the iOS 8, users should make sure that their devices are compatible.

Other products that are getting the operating system upgrade include the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 4s, iPad 2, iPad with Retina Display, iPad Mini with Retina Display (iPad 4), and iPod Touch 5th generation. Older devices such as the iPhone 4 and the original iPad will not be getting the iOS 8.

iOS 8 will be introducing a wide array of features. Naturally, much of the attention has been focused on the software's health-related apps. Apple device owners can store health-related information with the help of the HealthKit. The feature also stores data collected from apps relating to the users' health.

Still, the iOS 8 has a number of less talked about features, one of which supports WiFi calling. The function allows users to make calls over Wi-Fi connection, besides the usual LTE network. In theory, this allows users to save money on cellphone services.

Both Sprint and T-Mobile have Wi-Fi services for calling and texting. Unfortunately, AT&T will not be allowing Wi-Fi calling with the iOS 8 until 2015.

The new software also features Touch ID support for apps-use. In other words, individuals can access or lock apps using the fingerprint scanner on their devices. In addition to personalized security, users will be able to remotely access their homes at a later date.

Dubbed HomeKit, this function will form the groundwork for future smart home technologies. Using this feature, homeowners can lock doors or dim lights remotely using their mobile devices. This system is currently in development under an Apple partnership with the companies Honeywall and August.
