Apple iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 Release Date, Latest Rumors and Specs

Rumors suggest iPad Air 2 display components may hit the assembly lines within this month, while the iPad Mini 3 may be released with Apple's advanced A8 processor.

The speculation originated last week from ET News, which claimed exclusive access to a source with intimate knowledge of iPad Air 2 production. According to the South Korean news agency, about 6.2 million LCD displays to be installed in the iPad Air 2 will enter initial production from June to September this year.

Not much is known about the successor to the current iPad Air, apart from rumors that it will come with the Touch ID fingerprint security feature that is going to be standard on all next-gen Apple mobile devices. This same technology will be available for the iPhone 6 and iPad Mini 3, both of which are rumored to be under development.

Officially, Apple tends not to announce devices under development until shortly before release. Given the fact Apple has not given any new information regarding the iPad Air 2, it is difficult to confirm if such a device exists. The same can be said of the iPad Mini 3, which is the fabled replacement of the current iPad Mini with Retina Display -- more commonly dubbed by fans as the 'iPad Mini 2'.

Another rumored change is that the front-camera will be raised from 1.2 megapixels to 1.5 megapixels, while the rear-camera will be upgraded from 5 megapixels to 8 megapixels. Quite possibly the iPad Air 2 will come installed with Apple's newest A8 processor, which the iPad Mini 3 will reportedly share.

It was earlier speculated that both devices may be revealed at this year's WWDC developers' conference. Instead, Apple focused its energy on promoting the new iOS 8 software that is generally believed to be standard on all next-gen Apple hardware. In other words, both the iPad Air 2 and iPad Mini 3 will be getting the software.

Like the iPad Air 2, the iPad Mini 3 is widely believed to have its premiere date sometime in the third quarter of this year. Release date speculations vary between September and November 2014.
