Academy award winner Cate Blanchet, who plays Carol Aird, shares some intimate scenes with Rooney Mara, playing the character of Therese Belivet, as the two gorgeous women fall in love in the upcoming movie Carol, the story of two lesbian lovers set in the 1950s.

The movie, directed by Todd Haynes, is already getting rave reviews from critics, and this early, industry players are predicting awards from the Oscars after Carol was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May, reported Hypable. Mara bagged the Best Actress trophy in Cannes for her performance as Cate's lover.

Judging from the first released trailer of Carol, it is easy to predict an Oscar award in the next awards season.

The trailer shows intense stares and subtle gestures between Carol and Therese. Waves of emotion and restriction resonate throughout the trailer, reported the Philippine Daily Inquirer. The trailer features minimal dialogue but My Foolish Heart is played seamlessly on the background, adding further intrigue in its plot.

Set in the 1950s, the movie centers on the character of Carol who is in the middle of an unhappy marriage with actor Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights). She finds established a close relationship with Mara (The Social Network, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) who plays Therese, department store clerk. Their relationship eventually turned into romance.

Screenwriter Phyllis Nagy wrote the book-to-film adaptation of Carol, which is based on author Patricia Highsmith's novel titled The Price of Salt.

In a recent interview with Variety, Blanchet admitted to have had sexual relationships with a number of women in the past, reported Entertainment Tonight.

When asked if Carol was her first time to play to play as a lesbian, Blanchett replied, "On film -- or in real life?" Blanchett is currently married to playwright Andrew Upton. However, the actress refused to define her sexuality, "I never thought about it. I don't think Carol thought about it."

However, Blanchett has denied her statement claiming she was misquoted, ET said.

Carol will hit the screens for a limited release on November 20 in the U.S., and will premiere at the British Film Institute London Festival on October 14.
