Consequences

By Douglas VanBronkhorst

Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. (1 John 3:18, NIV)

He was Hindu, and not interested in the gospel. But his daughter was failing math. Swallowing his pride, he asked a Christian woman to tutor his child. The answer was "yes," with no fee! During one session, the student inquired about the special book in her teacher's home. "That's the Bible. It tells the story of God's love for us." "Can you teach me that also?" "If your father says it's OK." He agreed and the girl avidly studied both subjects. Her improved math skills rekindled Dad's dreams for his daughter. She also met her Father in heaven, becoming an enthusiastic follower of his Son. The remarkable changes in this young girl eventually led her family to Christ.

This story also has a "prequel." The father worked at a hospital with the Christian teacher and her physician husband. That couple's earlier decision to have their baby in his poor country, not America, made him think a Christian foreigner was an acceptable tutor for his daughter.

Decisions have consequences. Putting love into action leads to good results in our lives and others. We can't demand specific outcomes, but we can expect God to make love grow when a desire to serve him directs our decisions, large and small.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, may all my decisions reflect love for you and my neighbor. Amen.
