Rev. Dr. Roderick Hewitt, moderator of the United Church in Jamaica and the Cayman Inslands, was elected as Council for World Mission(CWM) moderator on 18 June, CWS reported on 2 July.
Also Rev. Robin Thompson, treasurer of the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa, was elected as CWM treasurer.
The new moderator Hewitt said "CWM is poised to be a sign of justice in relationships. We need unity in our faith, joy in our diversity and a commitment to mission that brings a significant and credible improvement in the quality of life for those to whom we go."
Hewitt was once CWM secretary for education in mission for 10 years until 1996 and worked in the writing of mission policies.
Also the former moderator Rev. Dr. Huang Po Ho and deputy moderators Dr. Sagar Lall and Eona Boey retired on 16 June at the assembly.
Evelyn Kamwendo from the United Church of Zambia said "CWM is going to miss Rev. Po Ho's efforts. He is very quiet person but out of that calmness he is a very tolerant leader."
Rev. Jung Kuang Lo presented Huang with a gift from the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. He said Rev. Po Ho's skills and talents would be used preciously in Presbyterian Church in Taiwan.
Hewitt said during the assembly "we need to dream new dreams in order to respond to the new forms of suffering in today's world."
The new treasurer Thompson, a qualified accountant, also said "I am deeply conscious that when God calls anyone to service, God equips that person."
In addition, CWM's deputy moderators are Wilson Gina of the United Church in Solomon Islands, Pauline Sathiamurthy of the Church of South India, Beryl Vaughan of the Presbyterian Church of Wales, and Wong Fong Yang of the Gereja Presbyterian Malaysia.
