WASHINGTON - D.C. Public Schools officials have signed an agreement this week with education officials in China to hire several teachers to instruct students in the Chinese language and culture.
The school system is seeking teachers from China because it hasn't been able to find qualified instructors through other channels.
Sally Schwartz, the director of international programs for the school system, says officials plan to offer Chinese at six schools.
That includes Eaton Elementary, Deal Junior High and Wilson Senior High in Northwest Washington and Burrville Elementary, Kelly Miller Middle School and Woodson Senior High in Northeast Washington.
Schwartz says demand and interest in Chinese is growing in the U.S., but it's difficult to find teachers who are certified under the federal No Child Left Behind law.
Officials hope to hire the six teachers by December.
