Destiny Players To Receive Legendary Free Gift from Bungie

Destiny
DLC and Sequel is coming. Bungie

Earlier this week, Destiny developer Bungie announced on Twitter that it would be giving away a "Legendary token of gratitude" for players of the popular first-person shooter, and today the company delivered.

"Packages are being deployed by the millions throughout the day. Check your emails and the Postmaster for confirmation," Bungie said in a Twitter follow-up on Wednesday.

The development studio first teased these gifts back on Christmas Day, saying that players could expect to get something special as a thank-you present in January. Although similar to the gifts given out to players during Halloween, these presents are specific weapons that you can't buy at the vendors, instead of what you'd get through an Engram.

Players can get the free gift through the in-game postmaster, sent from an "unknown benefactor." Users on Reddit are reporting that the weapons can either be a primary, secondary, or heavy weapon with random perks and are handed out one per account.

Destiny is an FPS game set in a mythical sci-fi setting that supports many of the same features that you'd find in a traditional massively multiplayer online game (MMO), but Bungie is quick to deny the marred MMO label. Instead, the company has called it a "shared-world shooter," playing to the fact that it's an action-based game, but still features a vast, open world that is shared by many players simultaneously. It also features many elements of traditional role-playing games, as well as a rewarding loot and customization system.

The game has enjoyed mostly positive reviews since its launch in September of 2014, with a Metacritic rating of 76/100. Most reviewers say that they enjoy the unique setting and gameplay style, but several others have criticized what they call a weak storyline. Bungie acknowledged that the story was lacking and disjointed, but soon released the game's first DLC expansion, The Dark Below, to give more background into the Destiny universe.

In the game's story, the universe is recovering after a collapse followed the "Golden Age" of colonization and discovery on other planets. Earth is now the only planet left inhabitable once again, and a celestial being known as "The Traveler" guards the planet's main city from harm. This being also gives citizens of The City an unknown power called "The Light." But an alien threat is encroaching upon The City and it's up to you to fight for humankind's survival.

Activision announced the day after launch that Destiny was "the most successful new gaming franchise launch of all time," reporting more than $500 million worth of units shipped. On November 4, 2014, Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg revealed that Destiny has over 9.5 million registered players.

Destiny is currently available for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One consoles.
