In episode 1, Lady Mary Crowley and Isobel fall into deep depression, because of their grief for the loss of Matthew six months earlier. Family and servants attempt to help her shift the focus to a future without Matthew. Tom Branson and Carson face figures from their pasts, and Edith experiments with modernism.

In episode 2, several characters meet at an opulent house party where a famous guest performs and a new friendship forms.

The popular drama features the returning cast, includes: Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Jim Carter, Joanna Froggatt Penelope Wilton, with guest stars Shirley MacLaine and Paul Giamatti.

Downtown Abbey was written and created by Julian Fellowes. Season 4 marks the return of one of the most popular drama series to MASTERPIECE on PBS.
