The 67th Primetime Emmy Awards revealed Thursday that Game of Thrones bagged the most number of nominations for a total of 24, followed by American Horror Story: Freak Show and mini-series Olive Kitteridge with 19 and 13 nominations respectively, BBC news said.

HBO's Silicon Valley and Veep gained two more nominations in the comedy category.

The New York Times said, "But while HBO held the lead, competition for the top prizes in drama and comedy continued to heat up across broadcast, cable and streaming outlets - signaling the vast changes reshaping the television landscape."

It is said that even though they have received 24 nominations from the Emmy's, Game of Thrones still cannot hide the fact that the producers were under scrutiny over the last season's finale.

"While that would seem to be a reason for the cast and crew to celebrate, the nds come at a time when the HBO show is under fire from even its most dedicated fans for its treatment of women. The season five finale aired over a month ago, but fans are still bristling from controversial scenes this season like the rape of Sansa, the shaming of Cersei and the death of Shireen," Time said.

Game of Thrones won four out of 19 nominations last year, including Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series; Outstanding Special And Visual Effects; Outstanding Costumes For A Series; and Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Fantasy Series.

According to AFP news, Game of Thrones already garnered the most nominations for last year's Emmy awards, but went home with none of the big prizes. Drama series Breaking Bad and long-time comedy hit Modern Family were named the best shows.

Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created for HBO by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's series of fantasy novels.

Peter Dinklage is the most rewarded member of the cast, with recognitions such as an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, and a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Series. In addition, cast members Emilia Clarke, Lena Headey and Diana Rigg received Emmy nominations for their performances in the series. The rest of the cast was also very praised, many receiving various awards nominations, including two Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series nominations rewarding all of the main cast for seasons 1 and 3.
