Brazilian kitesurfer Bruno Lobo has shown that saving a life is worth more than winning any Olympic gold medal.
Lobo, 31, a member of Brazil's national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics, had been training off the coast of São Luís, Brazil, on Friday, January 10, when he saw a woman in distress in the water. The dramatic rescue, captured on camera, showcased the athlete's quick thinking and bravery.
"The day God used me as an instrument to save this young woman, all honor and glory to Him," Lobo wrote in his Instagram post (translated from Portuguese).
Born in July 1993, Bruno Lobo is not only an Olympic-level kitesurfer but also an orthopedic doctor. A two-time gold medalist, Lobo triumphed at the 2019 and 2023 Pan American Games held in Santiago, Chile.
Speaking about the rescue, Lobo shared his humility, writing, "I only did my duty" and emphasizing that he was simply "in the right place at the right time."
The woman he saved reportedly left the beach safely after reuniting with her friends, with no health issues from the incident. She later expressed her deep gratitude in a comment on Lobo’s Instagram post:
"Words can't describe my gratitude! It was the salvation that God and my guides sent to me. I really could not handle it if I spent five minutes on the high sea, even knowing how to swim and using anti-drowning techniques. I wish you showers of blessings in your life!"
Lobo also took the opportunity to raise awareness about the dangers of open water. "Be warned about the dangers of the sea, rivers, and any place you don’t know because the current in some places tends to be very strong," he cautioned in a social media post. "The tide can pull you out to sea."
