The NFL trade season for this year went by relatively quietly but probably one of the most surprising deals was the one that moved Jamie Collins from the New England Patriots to the Cleveland Browns. According to sources, the Patriots decided to trade away their star linebacker in order to avoid potential issues within the locker room.

Just before the trade deadline passed, the Patriots made a shocking move by releasing Collins to the Browns in exchange for a conditional third round draft pick in 2017. Albeit surprising, many sources explained that the reason why the Patriots decided to trade him away was because he doesn't fit into their long-term plans.

This sounds a bit cryptic but still lines up to what NFL insider Ian Rapoport recently revealed regarding the trade.

According to Rapoport, the Patriots were starting to become increasingly unhappy with the way Collins was playing and his overall productivity this season. Because of this, the team was reportedly deciding on turning him into a part-time player.

Aside from missing precious playing minutes, becoming a part-time player would also mean that Collins would receive less money from the New England franchise.

Although the team had considered negotiating a new or cheaper contract with Collins, the Patriots ultimately decided to put him on the trading block to avoid creating issues between the athlete and the front office.

As a result, as NFL fans know, Collins was traded to the Browns.

Following the trade, there were rumors that suggested that Collins and the Patriots had a falling out. Apparently, Collins allegedly thought that the team was not valuing his presence. There were also reports stating that the Patriots tried to offer him with an $11 million contract.

Due to the rumored dispute regarding his value and contract, the entire situation was even likened to the contract dispute between Vonn Miller and the Denver Broncos during the offseason.

"I'm not the type to pout about anything," he said after the trade was made. "This is my new home. This is my focus. I'm ready."
"I'm not Von Miller," he added. "Let's be smart."
