HONG KONG- Following the strong critics from Chinese evangelicals in the U.S. for the controversial movie ‘Brokeback Mountain,’ Hong Kong Christians have stand up to defend the truth through a forum.
On Sunday, March 26, Chinese evangelical leaders have attended a seminar called "Brokeback’s Warning Christian Forum" organized by the largest Hong Kong-based Christian media group The Media Evangelism Limited at the Royal Plaza Hotel. The special guest from the U.S. chairman of the Great Commission Center International (GCCI) Rev. Thomas Wang and chairman of Culture Regeneration Research Society Dr. Thomas Leung were invited as keynote speakers.
The controversial Oscar Best Picture nominee ‘Brokeback Mountain’ portrays an entangling homosexual relationship between two cowboys out of their respective marriages. For evangelical Christians, it has highly challenged the teaching of the Bible and the bottom line of fundamental family morals. Through the Forum, Christians aim to reflect on how churches, Christian media and believers can help counteract the crisis with the truth from God.
Rev. Thomas Wang has strictly pointed out that the movie has posed a huge destruction on the society, the family and the young generation. Especially, he took the opportunity to openly speak to the Chinese director of ‘Brokeback Mountain’ Lee Ang.
"Mr. Lee, even though you have become famous, the cost is 10,000 families are destroyed; 10,000 couples are divorced and 10,000 youngsters are misguided," Wang stated seriously. "God gives you gifts, wisdom, and intelligence, and wishes you will use them in a positive way."
Wang also lamented that there is "no way out" for a homosexual family and everyone becomes a loser.
Apart from the forum, a special website was constructed by The Media Evangelism Limited with the contents focusing on the latest news on homosexual movement, responses to the ‘Brokeback Mountain’ movie, commentaries, counseling resources and others.
In addition, a prayer guide was prepared by the Jireh Fund, Campus Crusade for Christ and the Media Evangelism Limited to encourage believers to pray for those who may be influenced by the wrong message from the movie.
A Jireh Fund coworker shared, "When I was in the theater watching the movie, I prayed and asked God to give me wisdom."
