The writer and director of "How to Train Your Dragon 2" made headlines earlier this year when he announced that a main character in the children's film would come out as gay.

In the film, Gobber, a tough Viking, is shown watching a husband and wife argue, and says that's the reason he never got married, but then adds, "There's one other reason."

While the homosexual reference is subtle, many parents and pastors are dismayed by the filmmaker's decision to impose the homosexual agenda on children.

Pastor Kevin Swanson, father of five and Director of Generations with Vision, says presenting a mentor figure as homosexual to children is dangerous.

"Gobber is teaching the children the means by which they fight off the dragon," he stated on his radio show. "Gobber is the mentor. Gobber is the mentor to Hiccup, who is the protagonist in "How to Train Your Dragon 2."

"Of course, the producers are going to reveal the mentor as homosexual," Swanson continued. "The answer is obvious, for the same reason why the Greek mentors were homosexual, and they were focused in on what the Christian fathers used to refer to as the corruption of boys, and we can also throw out the term pedophilia."

Writer and director of the film Dean DeBlois, who is openly gay, told E! News that he "loves" the idea of a homosexual protagonist.

"When we were recording Craig Ferguson (who plays Gobber the Viking), I had written the line, "This is why I never got married, and he, as he often does, added it as an ad lib and he said, "Yup, Gobber is coming out of the closet." I think that's a really fun and daring move to put in. I love the idea that Gobber is Berk's resident gay."

Many parents feel that regardless of moral concerns, normalizing homosexuality in a children's movie is unnecessary.

"Family entertainment is slowly dwindling due to everyone's attempt to impose their personal agendas...sad," wrote Facebook user Christine DeRosier.

"Why does this need to be in a kid's movie? I thought it was supposed to be about dragons....My kids and I don't judge anyone's sexual preference, but how is this necessary?" asked another user.

"How to Train Your Dragon 2" was released in theatres on June 13 and took the second spot at the box office opening weekend with $ 50 million, which surpasses the original film's $36 million in 2010.

The film stars the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrara, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, Cate Blanchett, Djimon Hounsou, and Kit Harington.
