Hurricane Matthew has been churning through the Carribbean and is expected head up the coast of Florida soon. As of Friday night, this hurricane finished with Florida and began its takeover of Georgia. According to the Weather Channel, Hurricane Matthew is a Category 3 storm with winds expected up to 105 mph. Though that is frightening, the storm was initially a Category 4 storm on Thursday. Over the weekend Matthew posed a threat to northern Florida as well as northern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, and parts of North Carolina as well.
According to recent Twitter posts, St. Augustine and Daytona Beach are now completely flooded. The storm is so forceful that you cannot swim in these conditions. Jamie Rohme, surge specialist, believes these conditions to be life-threatening.
Further devastation from this storm can be seen in Haiti, where the death toll has now reached 842, making this the deadliest natural disaster since the 2010 earthquake.
So far only 3 people have been reported dead in Florida but 1,000,000 are without power at this time. Gov. Rick Scott, of Florida, has been urging residents to flee the area since Wednesday. Those that have refused to evacuate have found themselves without help as they face the worst of the storm alone.
Meteorologists are keeping an eye on Matthew as it seems the storm could move further inland soon.
As of this writing, the death toll is now over 800 in Haiti. The death toll in the United States has reached at least 17. Also, this storm is no longer considered a hurricane; it is now considered a post-tropical cyclone.
