iPod Touch 6th Generation Release Date and Rumors: Major Redesign to Be Expected

Apple's iPod 6th Generation is still awaiting a release date, while rumors suggest a major product overhaul for the fan-beloved classic. A number of Apple watchers believe that the next generation iPod will have a fall 2015 launch. Other sources such as Apple TechSpot speculate that the iPod Touch 6 will be unveiled at WWDC 2015 in June.   

Even so, recent developments have been characterized by slumping iPod Touch sales, and rising consumer demand for iPhone devices. According to Venture Capital Post, the hypothetical iPod Touch 6 will need to have popular iPhone features in order to have any hope of survival. However, the publication was quick to point out that the iPod's initial cost is similar to an iPhone - potentially driving away new users to the older series.

Apple has not officially confirmed the end of the iPod series though, which may offer a bit of consolation for iPod diehards. The device continues to be adored by holdouts who want access to music/video files without needing smartphones, which are usually tied to expensive mobile service contracts.

Potential Specs and Features

Regarding specs, there is no official information available. Price rumors range from $250 to $300 on a variety of sites. It has also been speculated that the device will come in 32 GB and 64 GB versions. The iPhone Touch 6th Gen may come in space gray, orange, green, pink, red, or silver.

Other rumors state that the device will be waterproofed and sport a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It is not clear if the iPod Touch 6th Gen will have a camera. Still, a number of gossip sites have suggested that it will sport an 8-megapixel camera.

Naturally, all information regarding the iPod Touch 6th Generation is unconfirmed and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Previously, a number of tech gossipers believed that the next iPod Touch would be available in September 2014.  Longtime iPod users were naturally disappointed when 2014 passed without any word regarding an iPod successor. Another setback occurred when Apple CEO Tim Cook failed to make any mention of the fabled device at the first 2015 quarterly financial call in February.
