Minecraft PS Vita Release Date and Price: Coming to U.S. Today

Minecraft's new PS Vita Edition is coming to the US PlayStation Store on October 14 for $19.99, according to a new official PlayStation blog post.

This PS Vita Edition allows you to play the popular sandbox game on-the-go as well as giving you the ability to transfer your existing Minecraft PlayStation 3 Edition save game to and from this new edition. If you're more of a PlayStation 4 fan, you can transfer your save files from the PS3, or upgrade to the PS4 Edition for only $4.99.

If you already own a copy of the game on PS3 on disc or through the PS Store, you can get the Vita version for free. This also works in reverse for those who purchase the PS Vita version and want it on their PS3 as well. This cross-buy offer does not work for the PS4, though.

Minecraft is a free-form building/survival game that swept the independent video game scene away when it launched as an alpha test on the PC in 2009. It was developed by Swedish developer Markus "Notch" Persson and has since sold nearly 54 million copies across the PC, Mac, Xbox, PlayStation, iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Linux platforms. The game has enjoyed success that reaches further than simple product sales, as it's being used to teach children in classrooms and plays host to its own fan convention each year as MineCon.

The Minecraft intellectual property and game's development studio, Mojang, was purchased by Microsoft just last month for $2.5 billion.

The Minecraft PS Vita Edition will become available through the PS Store on October 14 and in retail stores on November 11 for North American customers. A European version was announced just yesterday to release on October 15.
