Motorola Moto Z 2016 Release Date, MotoMods, and Specs; Look for Announcement In Early June

When it comes to Android smartphones, the usual labels come to mind with Samsung, LG, HTC, Sony, and Motorola.  The company has several phones out now that have or are awaiting the transition to Android M (also known as Android 6.0 or Marshmallow), such as the G, X, E, and Turbo series of phones.  The company will have a new phone out for this year for 2016, so when it comes time to get Android N, you can get with the Moto Z.  This is everything that is known about the new Motorola Moto Z for 2016, including its release date, MotoMods, and specs. 

According to GSM Arena, it has already been revealed for this year that Motorola will unveil a successor each for the Moto X Style and Moto X Play from 2015.  This time, these phones will have the name of the Moto Z.  This means that the Moto Z Style and Moto Z Play will be available internationally and possibly unlocked in the United States, the company has an ongoing partnership with Verizon for Droid-branded headsets. 

The image that you can see is the successor to the Droid Turbo 2 from 2015, and it will be the Moto Z-Droid Edition.  It does bear a resemblance to the Z Style and Z Play, but there is no Verizon logo.  There is going to be a move to phase out the Droid Turbos and Droid Maxxes that Verizon did in the past and have a simple "Droid Edition" of phones. 

If you are wondering what that strange set of six holes is on the bottom of each of the black, silver, and gold phones, it is for MotoMods that Motorola will unveil this year which are modular accessories that connect to the pins.  A separate article from GSM Arena details that these MotoMods are semi-modular with distinct functions like an extra battery, stereo speakers, and one with a pico projector. 

As far as the specs go on the Moto Z, it will probably match those on the Style.   That is, it will have an 820 Snapdragon 820 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, and a 5.5-inch QHD AMOLED touchscreen.  The camera will be a 13 Megapixel work, and the phone itself will be 5.2 mm thick with a 2,600 mAh battery. 

So, as Venture Beat reports, goodbye Moto X, hello Moto Z.  The question remains of when consumers can say hello to the new Moto Z series.  This entire new ecosystem, including the MotoMods, is expected to be revealed next month at the Lenovo Tech World show in San Francisco which starts on June 9.
