The Dallas Cowboys are running out of backup quarterback options for Tony Romo. This time, the Dallas Cowboys exec has his sights set on a Geno Smith trade this offseason.

The New York Jets effectively sidelined Geno Smith and eliminated his shot at the starter role when they openly declared how much they wanted Ryan Fitzpatrick to re-sign and once again lead the team. Although both quarterbacks appear to be in good terms, sources claim that the younger NFL star might have just reached the end of his patience with the recent development on the football team.

Onlookers noted that the New York Jets are actually giving supposed third stringer Bryce Petty more reps than backup Geno Smith. Will this finally push the once starter quarterback of the New York Jets to walk out of the team and seek for an NFL trade?

The answer appears to be in the negative. The New York Jets clarified that the move to give Bryce Petty the most number of reps - one next only to Ryan Fitzpatrick - is their desire to look into the former's skills.

"We like to mix and match people to see how they match up and play," explained Todd Bowles of the move to give Geno Smith less reps while Bryce Petty received more. The New York Jets head coach added, "A lot of guys are put first, second and third team. That doesn't mean anything."

While the New York Jets appear to be still fully onboard in putting Geno Smith behind Ryan Fitzpatrick in the roster charts, rumors are rife that the Dallas Cowboys are making the once troubled quarterback rethink his options. That is, the offer to learn from the great Tony Romo and play alongside Dez Bryant might just be prompting Geno Smith trade talks courtesy of the NFL star himself.

The Dallas Cowboys, albeit a team that failed to become contenders last NFL season, are poised to bounce back exponentially this year. With the fully recovered Tony Romo leading the football team, fans of the group are eager to see how the Jerry Jones squad will turn things around for the franchise. However, the lack of a backup quarterback capable and healthy enough to head the Dallas Cowboys if Tony Romo gets injured is a pressing need today.

Will this be filled by Geno Smith? Given his comments following the Ryan Fitzpatrick contract signing this NFL offseason, the quarterback shared his openness to trade talks anytime. At this point, however, the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys have yet to officially comment of the possible Geno Smith trade.
