NFL Rumors: Dallas Cowboys Eye Robert Griffin III Deal; RG3 Threaten Tim Tebow Chance For Tony Romo Spot

The Dallas Cowboys experienced a heartbreaking run in the previous NFL season. Initially pegged as potential Super Bowl contenders, the injury of Tony Romo halted the manifestation of the football team's dream. When the quarterback later returned, the Dallas Cowboys' hopes were once again fueled - thereby making them the Cinderella team in the NFL. However, the Carolina Panthers ended the second chance of the Dez Bryant abruptly even before the optimism caught on to the rest of the football community.

Apart from the devastating loss, the defeat in the hands of the Cam Newton squad also resulted in the season-ending injury of Romo. The Dallas Cowboys quarterback, who just recovered from back issues, faced more serious problems with the collarbone injuries he incurred. His absence later on manifested itself with an abysmal record and failure to make it to the playoffs. With this in mind, sports experts are of the belief that the Dallas Cowboys must sign a reliable backup for the team.

The rumor mill has churned out three potential candidates to take on the quarterback post behind Romo in the Dallas Cowboys. These are Cleveland Browns star Johnny Manziel, Washington Redskins player Robert Griffin III and NFL hopeful Tim Tebow.

Sources claim that Manziel might be out of the running due to his legal battles. Rumors are rife that Jerry Jones does not want a repeat of the spectacle brought by the troublesome Greg Hardy in the Dallas Cowboys last season. This leaves the fans with RG3 and Tebow.

"The assumption here is that Dallas will not want to use the fourth overall choice in the 2016 draft on a quarterback," noted Mike Sando of ESPN. He added, "Griffin could come cheap and without risk. The Cowboys would be adding a young insurance policy for Tony Romo without undermining him. Griffin would have a reasonable chance to play in 2016, given Romo's combination of age and recent injuries, but he would come to Dallas without starting expectations. If all went well, Griffin could get both time to assimilate and opportunities to play in an offense featuring talented linemen and receiving weapons."

Tebow has always been a favorite in Dallas. Prior to the news that RG3 might be available to enter the Dallas Cowboys roster, the Christian star has been making headlines regarding his chances to make the NFL team. However, no official comment has been given by either Tebow himself or Jones. With the entry of Griffin in the mix, it looks like the NFL hopeful might find himself out of the running for the backup post again.

Meanwhile, Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg discussed in an episode of ESPN's Mike & Mike how RG3 could easily fit in the Dallas Cowboys roster.

Greenberg said, "I would roll the dice on RGIII if he's interested. He's from Baylor -- he went to Baylor -- so it's right there, you know, sort of a little local thing. He wouldn't be expected to come in and play a whole lot. I know they're a high-profile team, but I don't think he would get that much attention if he's not playing and Romo is, and (he could) learn from a veteran group and a veteran quarterback with the idea that maybe, in two years or so, he can see if he's ready to do it."
