New reports have confirmed that the Kansas City Chiefs have placed Jamaal Charles on injured reserve. With the team missing its running back, the Kansas City organization could turn to the NFL free agency pool to sign a suitable replacement.

Since last season, Charles has been dealing with the effects of his ACL injury. Although he was able to play in the Chiefs' Week 8 game against the Indianapolis Colts, Charles reported feeling discomfort in his knee after the match.

Due to his existing condition, the team opted to get a second opinion on Charles. After an appointment with orthopedic surgeon James Andrews, who was the same doctor who performed an operation on Charles last October for his torn ACL, it was determined that the athlete will have to undergo a second surgery to repair his knee.

This means that Charles will not be able to play with the Chiefs for the next couple of weeks. He is expected to miss about six weeks but depending on his recovery, there's a chance that his absence might extend to cover the rest of the year.

This, of course, does not sit well for the Chiefs. Since they are doing pretty good this season with six wins and only two losses so far, Charles' absence could have a huge impact on the team's offense.

This is the main reason why the Kansas City franchise was forced to sign Bishop Sankey from the New England Patriots' practice squad.

However, Sankey is still a rookie and hasn't seen much action on the field yet. In other words, he might not be enough to cover Charles' spot in games.

So, if the Chiefs are still in need of a reliable running back, they should consider re-signing Knile Davis, who was recently traded, signed, then waived earlier this week.

The past couple of days have been a roller coaster ride for Davis. He was first traded by the Chiefs to the Green Bay Packers for a conditional seventh round pick in 2018. After his short stint with the Packers, he was waived from the roster on Oct. 31.

He was then claimed by the New York Jets on Nov. 1 but after a couple of hours, he was released from the team to make way for C.J. Spiller. With Davis available again, the Chiefs could re-sign him since they are in need of proper depth for their running back bench.
