NFL Rumors: New York Giants Appoint Josh Johnson As Backup QB to Replace Injured Ryan Nassib

Backup quarterback Ryan Nassib of the New York Giants was not able to attend Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to an injury. This prompted the team to appoint Josh Johnson as the No. 2 QB behind starter Eli Manning.

The recent game marked the Giants' third consecutive win since Week 6. However, despite their improving record, the team has suddenly found itself needing more depth in its quarterback bench.

During the game on Sunday, Nassib missed out on the team's pre-game warmups due to a soreness in his elbow. This then prompted the Giants to place him on the inactive list and promote Johnson as the new backup quarterback.

The exact condition of Nassib's physical status is not yet clear and there are no news yet if he will undergo certain medical procedures within the next few days. However, since he has been listed as inactive, there's a chance that he might miss out on more games in the following weeks, such as the upcoming match against the Cincinnati Bengals.

If this happens, then Johnson could be looking at becoming the team's backup quarterback, at least for the rest of this season. He would serve as an insurance policy in case something happens to Manning. Of course, this would not be a good scenario for the Giants especially since Johnson has not attempted to throw a pass in a regular season game since 2011.

Aside from this, Johnson is the only backup quarterback that the team has. In case he and Manning get injured, the team will have to appoint an athlete from a different position to take on the role.

Since this situation is not looking good for the team, the best option would be to bring in someone from the free agency pool. Ideally, this should be a player who has veteran experience.

As for Nassib, it is not yet clear when he will be able to return. He is also the latest player from the active roster to join the inactive list. In total, the Giants currently have seven inactives which includes Nassib, Leon Hall, Tavarres King, Will Beatty, Darian Thompson, Deontae Skinner and Kerry Wynn.
