Pepperdine University has filed a lawsuit against Netflix and Warner Bros. Entertainment, alleging that the upcoming comedy series Running Point unlawfully uses the school’s branding, team name, and colors. The university claims the show’s depiction of a fictional basketball team called the "Waves" is too similar to its own, creating confusion and potential reputational harm.

Key Allegations in the Lawsuit

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, argues that Running Point—produced by Mindy Kaling and starring Kate Hudson—features branding elements that closely resemble Pepperdine’s identity. The university’s athletic teams have long been known as the Waves, and the show reportedly uses the same name, similar blue-and-orange colors, and even the number “37,” which has historical significance to the school.

Pepperdine contends that these similarities could mislead viewers into believing the university is affiliated with the series, which includes mature content such as profanity, sexual themes, and substance use—elements that conflict with the school’s Christian values.

Pepperdine’s Legal Actions

Before filing the lawsuit, Pepperdine issued a cease-and-desist letter to Netflix and Warner Bros., requesting changes to the show’s branding. However, after failing to reach an agreement, the university moved forward with legal action. The lawsuit seeks an injunction to prevent the continued use of the disputed trademarks, as well as monetary damages and corrective advertising.

What’s Next?

Netflix and Warner Bros. have not publicly responded to the lawsuit. Legal experts suggest the case could set an important precedent regarding how real-world institutions and their branding are portrayed in fictional media.

With Running Point set to premiere soon, the legal dispute adds another layer of controversy to the series. Whether the lawsuit leads to changes in the show or a drawn-out courtroom battle remains to be seen.
