PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift Release Date And Price; Will There Be A Special VR Announcement at CES 2016?

By Mark Rollins

It is very clear that in 2016, Virtual Reality (VR) is going to hit a rise as devices like the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift are going to hit the market.  The issue is that consumers have not been told when these devices will hit the market, or what the price will be.  It is possible that CES 2016, which is in a few days, will have a revelation of the PlayStation VR and Oculus Rift Release Date and Price.

According to a very recent report from DualShockers, the PlayStation VR might release very soon, with a window of the first half of 2016.  This means that it could arrive before the summer, but the actual release date as well as the price is still a big secret for Sony.  There have been estimates that the price will be equal to that of a PS4, which is currently discounted to $300 for a bundle during the holiday season.

Considering that the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2016 will officially open its doors on January 6th in Las Vegas, it is possible that Sony could make an announcement then.  Especially when the company will hold their annual press conference at the event at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) on CES Press Day on January 5th.  Generally, Sony likes to announce non-gaming product there, so this would be playing against type for them to make the announcement there.

If Sony does not announce the release date or price of the PlayStation VR at CES, then they could do it at the Game Developer's Conference (GDC) on March 14th.  The other event would be the Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles, but that would be pretty late in the summertime.

As for the Oculus Rift, WCCF Tech states that the Oculus Rift is still on Track for Q1 2016, with their Oculus Touch controller coming in Q2 2016.  That might be a sooner release date than the PlayStationVR, but the specific release date is also not known, not to mention the price.

According to Segment Next, there are rumors that CES 2016 will also reveal some more information about the Oculus Rift.  This is due to a hint from Palmer Luckey, the young inventor of the device.  There is also a Reddit thread discussing what everyone wants to hear that reads as follows:  "Getting everything out in the open. That's what I'm looking forward to. No more waiting to know about the unknown. You want to know the price? You have it. You want to know the release date? You got it. You want to know the full specs? Here you go."

Palmer Luckey actually took the time to reply with just two words: "me too".  Perhaps Palmer wants to share all the details about his device, but just can't.

CES runs from January 6th to the 9th, so we should know for sure if there is any announcement made by Oculus or Sony by then.  If it doesn't come by then, Oculus or Sony will announce the respective devices soon, for sure.
