Nintendo has released sales figures for the new Super Smash Bros. 3DS version that was released last month, and the gaming giant says that it sold 705,000 copies of the game in its first two days and 2.8 million copies worldwide.

Super Smash Bros. is a fighting game that pits various iconic video game characters against each other in unique arena-based combat that focuses on pushing your enemies off the stage instead of killing them. This makes for a much more family-friendly video game. The original 12 characters were all from various Nintendo franchises, but the selection has grown to 51 characters across multiple game companies' properties. The 3DS version is the fourth installment in the series that started back in 1999 with the original Super Smash Bros, and the upcoming Wii U version will mark the fifth.

The diversity of characters, special moves, and fun-loving gameplay has earned the title raving reviews from video game critics, equating to an overall 85/100 Metacritic score so far. GamesRadar calls the game a "highly polished iteration of Smash Bros. that plays great on its own," while IGN says that the 3DS version feels "right at home."

But on November 21, fans will see the release of the franchise's Wii U version that should show off the game's "true potential," according to creator Masahio Sakurai.

Sakurai-san confirmed that the 3DS can be used as a controller for the Wii U version and fighters, including customized characters, can be shared between platforms. More features are teased by the game's designer in his Famitsu column, but details are scarce.

Interestingly enough, a recent leak on Amazon does reveal a stage creation mode as well as a board game mode on the Wii U version.

"Whether you're creating stages on the GamePad, competing in challenges crafted by Master Hand and Crazy Hand, or outwitting your opponents in a brand new board game mode, there's no doubt that the ultimate Smash Bros. game has arrived," the Amazon listing reads.
