A pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (PCT) appealed to President Chen Shui-bian to stop visiting temples and idol-worshipping-places to gain votes, according to Taiwan Church News in February.

Chen Shui-bian is campaigning for re-election which dues on 20 March. The political candidates make many visits to folk religion temples and churches to try to gain votes, said Rev Kao Min-jyi of Tainan Holiness Church. In his first letter, he called on the president to stop visiting folk religion temples and lead Taiwan's people from evil and idolatry.

The pastor justified his appeal in his second letter by discussing the dangers of Taiwan's tradition of idol worship. He said that the scripture opposes the practice and that the result will be "evil and doom".

He commented that the president's association with temples and places of idol worshipping will only "induce people into more suspicion".
