In early July, floods inundated the area near the province of Sichuan, affecting 3.8 million people in seven countries and 256 towns with economic losses that estimated a total of 495 million U.S. dollars.

The World Vision Relief Team stepped in around Aug 22 to distribute food and quilts to ten-flooded towns in Xuanhan and Jiajing County. Rice was distributed to families and "much-needed" support was provided to help them recover from the natural disaster.

The floods inundated farmlands, destroying the corn and rice crops. Families are now facing severe food shortages and, in some provinces, they are surviving on sweet potatoes that were harvested last autumn.

According to a press released last month by the government in HK, World Vision Hong Kong received the funding of 2 million dollars from the Disaster Relief Fund in order for them to disburse emergency relief kits to Sichuan victims.

The Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee, who advised the government in the move to cooperate with World Vision Hong Kong said that they hoped to grant relief for the flood victims and they will ensure that the money will be used for these "designated purposes," the press release said.

The Hong Kong Disaster Relief Fund was established in 1993 and provides disaster relief to regions beyond Hong Kong. They have also collaborated with the Hong Kong Red Cross in supporting them to assist the provinces of Chongqing, Guangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, and Xinjiang.

The World Vision Relief Team is expected to distribute 603,150 kg of rice to victims that they hope will provide food for a total of 38,370 people.
