Yolanda Adams Wins 3rd BET's

On Tuesday, June 29, at Hollywood’s Kodak Theater, the Black Entertainment Television (BET) handed out awards to African-American artists in many categories of entertainment. Gospel-singer Yolanda Adams claimed the Best Gospel Artist Award for the third time, becoming the first Gospel artist to win triple awards consecutively in the show’s history.

Along with music, the BET Awards also honor achievements in film and sports; a panel of entertainment and media executives chooses winners. Adams stood beside winners for Best Female R&B Artist Beyonc Williams, and Best Male Hip-Hop Artist Jay-Z. Other awards were given to those who appeared, including Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington, and Usher.

The three-hour long program kicked off with a performance by Kayne West, who sang “Jesus Walks” with a 32-member choir, drummers, dancers and a stage filled with candles. Adams was able to make her appearance with a powerful Gospel performance following West’s entrance.

Another highlighted performance, aside from the ones mainstream stars showcased, was that of Gospel great Smokie Norful, who performed “I Need You Now.”
