Philosophical questions about the meaning of life, death, God and the last days of mankind will be woven into the new British-American science fiction comedy-drama miniseries entitled "You, Me and the Apocalypse." The show airs Thursday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. CST on NBC.

In the show's plot, the world is coming to an end in 34 days, due to an 8-mile comet hurtling toward Earth. Life as it's known is counting down to extinction.

When the news is announced that a comet is on an unavoidable collision course with the planet, the producers indicate a hilarious chain of events is set in motion as an eclectic group of seemingly unconnected characters begin to intersect in unexpected ways.

The story follows an unusual assortment of mismatched characters, each coping with the impending end of the world in his or her own bizarre way. 

Specifically, an unlikely group of individuals are trapped safely in a bunker miles beneath the Earth's surface, including Jamie (Mathew Baynton), a cute but unassuming banker with a twin brother who runs a cyber terrorist organization; Sister Celine (Gaia Scodellaro), a sweet nun who recently took a post under Father Jude Sutton (Rob Lowe) in the Devil's Advocate office; and Rhonda McNeil (Jenna Fisher), a librarian who took the rap for her son's hacking of the National Security. The librarian's character unwillingly befriends Leanne (Megan Mullally), an unhinged white supremacist who takes a deeply reluctant Rhonda under her wing. 

Sister Celine and Father Jude are tasked with investigating the biblical prophecies surrounding the end times, including the identities of false messiahs and perhaps an antichrist. But Father Jude is an unlikely priest, who drinks and swears, and seems to want to have a lot of sex before the world ends.

The cast also includes Joel Fry, Paterson Joseph, Pauline Quirke and Kyle Soller.

"You, Me and the Apocalypse" is written and executive produced by Iain Hollands. Also serving as executive producers are Juliette Howell, Lynn Horsford, Tim Bevan ("The Theory of Everything"), Eric Fellner ("Fargo"), JoAnn Alfano, Cameron Roach, Lizzie Gray and Andrew Conrad.

It is being filmed in London, England. One observer, Kevin Garren, posted online that he thought it is going to be interesting to see how NBC edits this for the American broadcast, because "there's tons of language in the UK version that will obviously be censored or replaced."

Some fans on social media are comparing this new miniseries to "The Last Man On Earth" television series, which is an American post-apocalyptic comedy television series created by and starring Will Forte. Last Man premiered on Fox on March 1, 2015.
