It's been a year since the first-generation Apple Watch released, and most users complain about its too much reliance on iPhone. Now, rumors suggest this year's Apple Watch has mobile data support and can function without a connecting to a smartphone.

Here's what is currently known about Apple Watch 2 release date, specs and rumors on the web.

Engadget reported one of the biggest complains in the current Apple Watch is that it's not very functional without an iPhone. The wearable needs to be tethered to Apple's handset to provide basic functions like receiving calls and messages.  

As per report from Wall Street Journal, the second-generation Apple Watch will become available with integrated mobile data support and a faster chipset. This means users can leave their iPhone at home and continue to get notifications and run apps on the Watch.

On the other hand, it is not expected that the Watch will completely get rid of iPhone. The wearable still needs to be connected to the handset to download apps. Nevertheless, the mobile data support feature will give the wearable greater independence.

The Week UK has picked up reports that Apple teamed up with other phone makers like Samsung and Microsoft to develop a new standard for eSIM technology that will allow users to share their mobile data plan to multiple devices. In other words, Apple Watch 2 users will be able to share their data network to iPhone or iPad users.

It is also worth mentioning that Samsung's Gear S2 smartwatch and the LG G Watch Urbane 2nd Edition can function independently without the need of a smartphone. Tech experts believe Apple Watch 2 can compete with these devices by having new features and specs.

Speaking of features, it is rumored the Watch 2 will come with a 40 percent thinner chassis than the first generation model. Also, since the wearable would not require a tethered iPhone, it will let users listen to live streaming music and use GPS.  Furthermore, a front-facing FaceTime camera has been a longstanding rumor.

As for the release date of Apple Watch 2, fans are eyeing on two upcoming events. The wearable could be announced at June's Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, or it could be introduced in September together with the much-anticipated iPhone 7.

For now, let's wait and see if the Cupertino-based tech company will reveal the Watch 2 next month.
